It all started with my Dad when we launched our homemade kayak from our beach house on the southern English coast. A few paddle strokes later we were upside-down and swimming! Undaunted, I have been paddling ever since. That was 1968 and there has been a lot of water traveled since. As a teen I raced in the Junior K1 division for both sprint and marathon, dabbled in slalom and got involved in teaching kayaking at summer youth camps.
After traveling around the world in 1978-79 with my wife in our VW bus (that’s another story), we settled in northern California. When we moved to Atlanta (albeit briefly around the ’96 Olympics), I messed around with white water canoeing and river running. But after going back to northern California I was back with two blades in the ocean.
With the hi-tech collapse in the early 2000s, I left the corporate-world and immersed myself in the big-wide-world! I got serious with my coaching through the ACA and BCU and started Kayak Kraft for paddle sports education and expeditions. About this time the kids were starting their college track, so we re-located to Bainbridge Island, Washington. I took over the west coast distribution for Valley and North Shore, took on Snap Dragon, Gaia and others as supplementary lines and started Active Paddles as my distribution arm. With Valley surf kayaks at my disposal I have now taken up surf kayaking.
I have paddled in many wonderful places around the world and love the challenges of the open-coast, but also enjoy the tranquility of sheltered bays where wildlife abounds.
My experience beyond paddling is marketing within the telecommunications equipment sector. I started in product development, moved onto product management, market development and ended my hi-tech carrier as VP of Marketing. I have a BSc in Electrical Engineering from the UK, a certificate in Market Management from Golden Gate University and a MBA from UC Berkeley.
